COVID-19 to accelerate utility adoption for Remote water metering and control

COVID-19 crisis has taught everyone globally about social distancing, self-isolation, washing hands and/or sanitizing and staying home becoming the new normal. As countries around the world put plans in place to cope with the COVID-19 outbreak, most of us are spending more time in our homes through social distancing. Utilities and more specifically water have been so much affected through overspending or dramatic changes in demand as everyone is expected to wash hands to keep safe.

Water Consumption patterns in growing African cites are predicted to be more like weekends than a regular working week during social distancing measures. Water crisis is still a big menace in major municipalities and cities across the continent with lack of data to help water service providers balance the grid to the populations working remotely and spending almost most of their time at home and those who still visit public places having to use hand washing stations.

There is a sizable part of the workforce who cannot work from home. Often, these workers rely both on weekly or daily payments and still struggle to pay their utility bills during the crisis. To date, water utilities are struggling to deal with little information to predict the usage patterns to help manage water consumption trends. Usage patterns may well be less predictable during weekdays than on regular weekends.

But crisis moments present even a bigger opportunity to Hydrologistics Africa Ltd (HydroIQ) through application of its smart metering technologies for a connected water grid. At HydroIQ, we collect as much data as possible with our sensors and apply data analytics and AI. We gather insights that depict the challenge of strained water usage patterns and get to determine when and how best the services can be offered to the end consumers. This allows us to obtain a record of water supply information.

HydroIQ Smart water gridOur 360° end-to-end software applications offer innovative technologies to extract the value out of data to provide value-added solutions and visualization to water management companies and distribution while alerting consumers whenever water is running low and using intelligent algorithms for early detection of leaks.

HydroIQ allows for easier adoption to water suppliers, gated communities, landlords and property management companies making available all the information on water consumption in order to monitor progress on an online dashboard. HydroIQ mobile App provides consumption and historical billing data, this promotes a reasonable use of water and allows control over expenditure by consumers who can pay conveniently using mobile money.

HydroIQ monitors water distribution networks from the supply, calculating differences of the supplied and consumed flows in real time. Our remote water metering provides for easy detection of leaks in the water grid and prevents the failing of the system with consistent outcome to both the water supplier and the end consumer when the quality and quantity of water supply is demanding.

To come to the point, HydroIQ is a vital and efficient solution to help water services providers automate metering and billing while at the same time unlock more revenues. COVID-19 is perhaps calling to attention the need for automation faster than utilities would like or even realized as operating models and margins have become increasingly challenged…
